A question we’re often asked is:
What do I need to file my taxes?
In truth, the documents you might need largely depend on your individual situation.
But to help you prepare for that dreaded tax appointment, here are some of the different slips you may need and what they’re for:
- T4: Employment Income — if you're employed, you’ll likely receive your T4 in January or February.
- T4A: Statement of Pension, Retirement Annuity and Other Income — typically for income received from annuity, RESP withdrawal or workplace pension plan.
- T4RSP or T4RIF: Statement of RRSP Income or Income from a RRIF — you’ll receive one of these if you withdrew funds from your RRSP, RRIF, LRIF, or PRIF.
- T5: Statement of Investment Income — this is for various types of investment income
- T3: Statement of Trust Income Allocations and Designations — you’ll receive this if you have mutual fund trusts (like EFTs) in non-registered accounts.
If you’re not sure what documents you need for this tax season, make sure to get in touch with your accountant!
