For automotive amateurs, even the thought of talking about torque or powertrain can be overwhelming.
We totally get it!
But car competency can be the difference between quick fixes and costly repairs.
Not only that, but expanding your vehicle vocabulary can save you time and money — and spare you from car trouble down the road!
And who doesn’t want that ;)
So let’s go back to the basics.
Here’s some important terminology:
- Power Train: This refers to parts of the vehicle that create and deliver power — namely the transmission and engine.
- Horsepower: This is the amount of energy that the vehicle’s engine produces.
- Torque: Measures strength of the engine and the amount of time it takes to transmit power to the wheels.
- Spark Plug: This is what ignites the combustion that powers your engine when you turn the key in the ignition.
- Undercarriage: This is the underside of an automobile — it’s the framework that supports the rest of the vehicle.
- Auto Hesitation: A problem that occurs when a vehicle doesn’t accelerate as quickly or as smoothly as it should.
- Rough Idle: This is when your vehicle’s engine vibrates and rattles while it’s parked and running.
- Flooded Engine: This is when too much fuel floods the cylinders — it usually makes it difficult to start the vehicle.
Understanding this terminology will ensure that you’re savvy about all things auto.
And your mechanic will surely appreciate it ;)
