Cavities, as you may know, are caused by a buildup of plaque that's left unchecked.
You may also know that we can prevent cavities by brushing, flossing, and staying on top of your oral health.
But what do we do if a cavity has already formed?
Well, well, well – glad you asked.
Let’s talk about dental fillings!
When we treat cavities, we remove the decayed part of the tooth, substitute synthetic material in the vacuum.
The process looks a little something like this:
- A local anesthetic is applied to numb the area around the targeted tooth.
- Then, using either a drill, an air abrasion instrument, or a laser, we remove the decayed area of the tooth.
- Next, we run a diagnostic on the area to ensure that all of the decay has been removed.
- Assured of this, we clean the removed area to prepare for the filling.
- We then apply a liner to protect the never if necessary.
- After which, a tooth colored material is applied layer by layer.
- We use a special light to harden each layer.
Finally, once we have successfully applied each layer, we will shape the material to fit the natural contours of your tooth…polish it off…and leave it nice and shiny!
