Bad breath is no fun.
So how can we avoid it?
The first step, naturally, is to brush your teeth at least twice a day.
If you can brush immediately after every meal, even better.
An antibacterial toothpaste can also be very effective.
While you're at it, make sure to brush your tongue as well, since the back of your tongue is by far the most likely source of bad odors.
Next, make sure to floss at least once a day.
The bacteria that builds up between your teeth exacerbates bad breath, which we can only reach and fix through flossing.
You’ll also want to do your best to keep your mouth hydrated.
A bad case of cottonmouth is directly related to the development of cavities.
So, on that note, if you can, avoid tobacco and smoking in general.
Your diet, too, plays a part in feeding the mouth monsters:
While there are obvious culprits like onions and garlic, sugary foods have also been linked to bad breath.
Finally, make sure to change your toothbrush every few months.
An old, frayed toothbrush won’t be as effective in cleaning your teeth as a fresh one.
If these preventative measures aren’t working, it may be a sign of something more serious – like gum disease – so if you are practicing all of the above but are still experiencing bad breath, we encourage you to book an appointment with us as soon as possible :)
