Some people take their teeth for granted.
We use them every day, and, although they are not bone, our teeth are an essential component of our skeletal system.
Pretty cool when you think about it – and even cooler once we understand the true magnificence of our molars and the titillating power of our teeth.
Teeth are the hardest substance in the human body and are composed of a variety of parts and layers:
- The enamel, which is the hard, white, outer part of our teeth
- Dentin: a layer underneath the enamel, which is the perpetrator of tooth sensitivity
- Pulp: the softer, living structure within your teeth, complete with blood vessels and nerves
- Cementum: a connective layer of tissue which binds the roots of your teeth to your gums and jawbone
- Periodontal ligament: a layer of tissue that holds your teeth tightly against your jaw
Normally, an adult should have 32 teeth (unless you play hockey…).
These are made up of:
- 8 incisors, your 4 middlemost teeth
- 4 canines, the pointy teeth just outside your incisors
- 8 premolars, which are found between your canines and molars
- 8 molars, which are the flat teeth found near the back of your mouth
- 4 wisdom teeth – these teeth “erupt” at around age 18, and are often surgically removed as they can cause displacement of surrounding teeth
And there you have it – if any of your team of 32 are acting out, or laboring under discomfort, we encourage you to contact us for a checkup :)
