Cavities are all-too-common.
They are the result of tooth decay, either to the enamel of your teeth (the outer layer) or the dentin (the inner layer) or both.
Symptoms of cavities include intermittent tooth pain; sensitive teeth or pain caused by hot, cold, or sweet foods; holes or pits within your teeth; black, white, or brown tooth stains; and, lastly, pain when we bite down.
Tooth decay is caused when foods containing carbohydrates are left to sit on the teeth.
The culprits include cereal, bread, soda, milk, cake, fruit, candy, and more.
Bacteria in your mouth turn the carbs into acids, and they begin to – literally – melt your teeth.
Ouch….
And, despite what you may have heard, adults are just as susceptible to cavities as children.
As we get older, our gums begin to recede, which leaves the roots of our teeth exposed to plaque.
Additional causes for gum recession can include poor brushing, a lack of fluoride, dry mouth, eating disorders, and acid reflux.
The best way to prevent cavities is to brush at least twice daily, floss regularly, and to see your dentist semi-annually for a checkup and cleaning.
