Gum disease is not a pretty thing.
Oral bacterial growth, if left untreated, can compromise your teeth completely.
But this story begins with ‘gingivitis’ – otherwise known as inflammation of the gums, and the chief predecessor to gum disease.
Symptoms are typically mild at first, and, hence, are easy to ignore.
We do not recommend this.
Precisely because the consequences of doing so are grave and the reversal of symptoms so easy:
Just brush, floss, and attend regular cleanings with your dentist.
Failure to do so will result in the development of periodontitis – i.e., gum disease, which causes the inner layer of our gums and bones to recede from our teeth.
Pockets are formed, and these pockets fill with bacteria and food debris.
The net result?
Infection.
The bacteria permitted to fester in these pockets produce toxins and poisons, which break down the bone and tissue that hold our teeth in place.
Over time, the pockets grow until at last our teeth’s connective tissue is completely destroyed, and, one by one, our teeth loosen and start to fall out.
Doesn’t sound too pleasant, right?
So, as always, brush your teeth – and, of course, book an appointment with us if you think anything is amiss or if your checkup is overdue :)
