We hate plaque – with a fiery passion!
Plaque is a sticky, colorless film of bacteria that clings to our teeth, and is caused when foods high in carbohydrates are left to linger there.
Bacteria break down these carbohydrates into acids, which then mix with food debris and saliva.
The name of the mixture = plaque.
The plaque, as mentioned, sticks to our teeth, and the acids therein start to dissolve our teeth’s outer layer in a process known as…
Tooth decay – or the beginnings of cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease, which is linked to a number of serious issues:
- Heart disease
- Diabetes
- Premature birth
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Dementia
Scientists are divided on the precise nature of the link between gum disease and these corollary issues, but here’s the leading theory:
Bacteria involved in gum disease escape into the bloodstream and proceed to wreak havoc on your internal organs.
Thankfully, as with most of the potential problems that loom over our oral health, the remedy for prevention is simple:
We must brush our teeth at least twice daily, floss regularly, and see our dentists for a routine, semi-annual cleaning.
