One of the best ways to maintain a happy and healthy HVAC system is to regularly change the air filter.
Over time, your air filter clogs up with dust and debris.
When left unchecked, this will cause your HVAC system to work harder than normal to achieve the same effect, thereby reducing the system's lifespan and adding costs to your energy bills.
We recommend checking your air filter once a month – replace it, of course, when it is too full of debris.
As a rule, non-pleated air filters should be changed monthly and pleated air filters should be changed every three months.
Now that we know when to change our filters, which filter do we need?
First, check your unit for information on which size filter it uses.
On most units, this will be included somewhere on the exterior.
Common air filter sizes include 16 by 20 inches, 16 by 25 inches, and 20 by 25 inches.
Next, snap a photo of your current air filter, bring it to the hardware store, and find a match.
When purchasing your new filter, we recommend buying anything with a MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rating of six or above.
For those in pursuit of the highest air quality, the higher the MERV rating the better.
