Did you know that some homes can cool themselves without the use of AC?
It’s called passive cooling – a process that’s been around since the time of the Ancient Egyptians.
But how does it work:
Simply put, features in the home are designed to control the temperature without using energy.
Passive cooling serves two basic needs:
- Cooling the building
- Cooling the people
And passive cooling can occur through a number of means:
- Designing the floor plan to reflect the local climate
- Carefully choosing the living and sleeping areas
- Thermally protecting air conditioned rooms
- Maximizing convective ventilation
- Positioning furniture to optimize the efficiency of fans, breezes, and ventilation
With a bit of creativity, you can start to make use of passive cooling in your own home.
For example, create a windstream by opening windows on both sides of the house, then position furniture within the path of the natural breeze.
Give it a shot and save on AC this summer!
P.S.
We trust you will still want to make use of your AC, even if you become, like the Egyptians, a master of passive cooling, so don’t forget to book an appointment with one of our technicians to have your HVAC system serviced :)
