You’ve fallen down the self-improvement rabbit hole, and now you’re wondering:
What is the difference between counseling and life coaching, and which one is right for me?
We’re happy you asked!
Truthfully, the two are similar: both involve providing valuable advice, and both promote growth through challenging times.
Naturally, there is some overlap in the benefits that these services have to offer.
However, they have distinct goals and serve specific purposes.
From our experience, counseling is coping-focused.
The purpose of counseling is to help you deal with current life stressors.
Counselors create a safe and supportive space for you to explore what is troubling you — to recognize and deal with problems in your life.
Life coaching, on the other hand, is action-focused.
The purpose of life coaching is to help you set and achieve objectives.
Coaches help you maximize your potential and challenge you to reach your goals.
When you are trying to determine which one is right for you, it may be helpful to consider:
- What are you currently struggling with?
- What are you hoping to achieve?
If you still can’t decide, don’t worry!
