It’s time we have the ‘talk’.
We’ve been scrubbing through our records and we realized that you haven’t received the low-down on exfoliation – shame on us! ;)
So, {{contact.first_name}}, let's get down to business.
When you exfoliate, you remove dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. This can be done using chemicals, a granular substance, or an exfoliation tool.
Naturally, you shed your dead skin cells every 30 days or so. These dead cells, however, often don't shed away completely, leaving you with clogged pores (think zits, blackheads) and flaky patches of skin.
Essentially, you may end up looking like Palpatine from Star Wars –
So, let’s avoid that…
Here’s what we do:
Step one – determine your skin type, so you can find the right product for you.
Now, if you don’t have time to see a specialist, just ask yourself a simple question:
Do I have sensitive skin?
If you do, gentle is often better, and, in general you should stick to chemical exfoliants as opposed to physical exfoliation.
Oh, there are two other important rules to follow:
Not all skin on your body is created equal, so use the appropriate exfoliant for the appropriate area.
And be careful underneath the eyes – you’ll want an acid serum (introduce it to your skincare routine slowly).
So now that you’ve got your products, it's time to learn how to apply them.
First things first…
When using a chemical exfoliant, always follow the instructions – duh, right? – but seriously, even the right products can give you poor results if applied incorrectly.
But here’s something the instructions on the bottle may not tell you…
Always exfoliate in a warm, humid environment. (Like we needed another excuse for a hot shower…)
The warmth helps to soften your skin and release your body's natural oils, while simultaneously opening up your pores.
If you prefer a hot bath to a hot shower, avoid fragranced gels and soak for about 10 minutes before you begin the process.
OK – so we know WHY & WHAT, but what about WHEN?
Although you can do it at any time, it is best to exfoliate in the morning, because your skin repairs itself overnight – leaving a layer of cells just waiting to be washed away.
Once done, apply a moisturizer (we like shea butter) to help keep your skin looking radiant. Why? Because you deserve it.
Happy scrubbing!
P.S.
