It's that time again!
Time to take a moment to talk about skin care.
But this time, we’re not going to touch on topical ointments, sink into skin serums, or even criticize creams.
This time, it's all about the benefits of fat.
Yes, {{contact.first_name}}, really.
They’re called essential fatty acids, and they live up to their namesake.
There are two main types of EFAs: omega-3s and omega-6s
These EFAs are essential to maintaining healthy cell membranes – the same cells that make up your skin!
They are crucial for keeping your skin hydrated, as they help to produce your skin's natural oil barrier.
What this means for you is plumper, younger looking skin.
The only catch?
EFAs aren’t generated by your body – only by the foods you eat.
Typically, a balanced diet will contain 20-30% of total fat from the calories you consume on a daily basis – including omega-3s and omega-6s.
On the flipside, this also includes saturated fats, which, as you may know, are related to a host of health complications.
You should try, where possible, to replace the saturated fats typically found in processed foods with healthier EFAs.
(It’s easy to tell when you aren't getting enough EFAs – your skin becomes dry, inflamed, and prone to blackheads.)
But the magic of EFAs doesn't end there!
Research has suggested that they may reduce sun sensitivity for those with photodermatitis AND reduce inflammation caused by acne.
If that weren’t enough, they also reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, joint pain and even depression…
Woah.
OK, now that you’re sold on the benefits of EFAs, let's talk about where to get them, and the importance of keeping them in balance.
Some of the best sources for omega-3s are Salmon, Mackerel, Walnuts, Sardines, Flax, Soy, and Fortified Eggs.
Omega-6s are more commonly found in baked goods and cooking oils.
It is all too common for your diet to be short on omega-3s, and too rich in omega-6s. The trick is to keep them balanced –
