Sunscreen: we love the smell, and we all (most of us) wear it.
And since we put it on our bodies so regularly, it seems only right that we should understand what it’s really doing for us.
Overexposure to the sun comes with cosmetic downsides, like premature skin aging, wrinkles, age spots, redness, sensitivity and peeling.
But overexposure to the sun harbors a much greater danger:
Skin cancer.
Sadly, everyone is at risk, regardless of our accidental differences – 1 in 5 Americans will develop the disease in their lifetime.
Here is where we welcome the power of sunscreen – specifically, as recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology, sunscreen that provides broad spectrum protection (the sun has a couple types of rays), is SPF 30 or higher, and water-resistant.
Nevertheless…
Even if you are wearing the best sunscreen around, additional precautions are warranted.
Find shade when you can, especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when the sun's rays are most powerful.
(A handy trick to tell your friends – when your shadow is shorter than you are, consider finding some shade.)
Wear appropriate clothing to protect yourself – such as a lightweight long-sleeved shirt, pants, a hat, and UV protected sunglasses.
You can even pick up some clothes that have a ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) number – you will find this information on the label.
Lastly, be careful next to water and snow – we’re sure you’ve been blinded by a reflection or two in your lifetime.
Happy slathering!
