Physiotherapy is the go-to method for treating physical injuries and impairments.
But for physiotherapy to be truly effective, there needs to be some form of a home program.
These are the exercises that you practice between your sessions.
They aim to increase your strength and mobility — and reduce your pain.
These exercises are often the key to your recovery.
So how do you stay on top of them?
Here are our top three tips:
First, make sure you understand their purpose.
To make progress, you need to know why you’re doing the exercises and how they help.
Understanding their purpose will help you appreciate why you sought out physiotherapy in the first place.
And it makes the effort worthwhile!
So if you’re unsure, just ask your physiotherapist — we promise they won’t bite :)
Next, set realistic expectations.
Healing takes time, energy, and commitment.
Thinking that you can do more than you actually can almost always leads to failure.
So it’s vital that you set realistic expectations for yourself — and tell your therapist if you’re struggling to keep up.
Lastly, attach the exercises to an existing routine.
It’s much easier to stay on top of your exercises if you attach them to something you already do every day.
For instance, create a rule where you must do your exercises before you can brush your teeth.
If you’re worried your exercises will take up too much time, pair them with an enjoyable activity — like watching TV.
And do them at the same time every day!
Remember, consistency is key to recovery.
