Timber!
Although trees are a lovely addition to your property, you need to be careful – leaning branches can reach out toward your roof and cause significant damage.
But don’t get out the chainsaw yet!
Contrary to popular belief, trees may benefit roofs by:
- Blocking the wind: trees that are upwind of the roof can block the wind and reduce its effect on your shingles.
- Protecting your roof from UV: taller trees can offer shade and help reduce the effect of UV light on asphalt shingles.
- Moderating the temperature: the shade trees offer can also reduce the temperature in your home!
On the other hand, trees can damage roofs by:
- Dropping branches: even tiny branches can scratch your roof and damage your shingles.
- Dropping leaves and needles: debris will clog your gutters, which will wreak havoc on your roof and reduce its lifespan.
- Animal access: taller trees enable animals, especially squirrels, to travel onto your roof and build their nests.
So, if you see any branches trying to cop a feel on your house, it may be best to get those trimmed before it's too late.
