Breathe in, breathe out.
Seems simple enough, right?
Maybe not.
Breathing correctly is an essential skill to master before you can set foot on a yoga mat.
When you get the hang of proper breathing techniques, you lay the foundation for a grounded and fulfilling practice.
Correct breathing also reduces your use of accessory muscles in the neck, jaw, and upper chest — you’ll want to avoid straining these during a physical yoga practice.
One of the best yoga exercises for beginners is deep breathing to the fullest possible extent.
So, how do you do it?
Start by sitting in a comfortable position and placing your hands on your ribs.
Now take 5 slow, deep breaths — feel your ribcage expand in your hands as your belly fills with air.
Then, slowly exhale as you draw your tummy up and in, engaging the muscles in your core.
These relaxed and deliberate breaths will send signals to your body and allow you to calm down.
And there you have it!
Regardless of your approach or your level of expertise, if you practice regularly, you’ll feel better from head to toe — and, remember, we’re always here to help :)
