Contrary to popular belief, yoga isn’t just about doing headstands or contorting your body into pretzel-like poses.
If you thought that it was, we don’t blame you!
There is so much misinformation about the practice of yoga that it can be difficult to discern fact from fiction.
So it’s time to squash some myths surrounding this misunderstood activity!
Myth #1: You must be flexible to practice yoga
If you search up #yoga on Instagram, there are over 109 million posts.
Plenty of these posts are just pictures of influencers twisting themselves into seemingly-impossible positions.
This is just one of the many places that yoga myths come from.
When it comes to flexibility, there is always room to improve — so if you have trouble touching your toes, you can rest assured that there’s always a place for you on the mat :)
Myth #2: Yoga is just stretching
You’ve probably heard this one before.
Both yoga and stretching can relieve tightness and help prevent muscle aches, but there are a number of differences between the two.
Unlike stretching alone, many yoga poses are woven together to create flows and deepen the breath.
Myth #3: Yoga is only for young people
Myths like this come from a misconception that yoga is only a physical practice.
As we all know, yoga is a profoundly spiritual, mentally enlightening exercise — and the beauty of it is that it doesn’t discriminate!
Naturally, older folks should take extra care when practicing yoga — since they typically have tighter joints and more brittle bones, they’re at a higher risk of injury.
However, poses are easily adaptable — for example, many seniors choose to practice yoga on a chair for strength and flexibility training.
We hope this helps clear up any misconceptions — and if you’d like to learn more about yoga, just send us an email or give us a call :)
