What Yelp’s Crackdown on Review Collection Means to You

March 9, 2018

Yelp recently announced a that they are cracking down on soliciting reviews from customers. Apparently they believe that it leads to a bias from customers.

They recently started sending emails like this to customers:

While it’s not surprising Yelp is taking this direction, it is a disappointment that they are choosing to punish businesses that go in this direction.

What do I need to do?

Currently if you’re asking customers to submit reviews on Yelp, stop, our service has never solicited reviews for Yelp, so we’re in the clear. If you’re business relies on Yelp to promote itself the last thing you want is to fall under their penalty and see your business suffer.

While we’re sorry to see Yelp make this more, we think in the long term it benefits neither them nor their customers. At the end of the day if everyone remembered to do everything reminders and calendars would be a thing of the past. Asking customers to share honest feedback isn’t a crime, it’s just good business.

Luckily the influence of Yelp continues to wane as Google continues to rise as the number one way for businesses to promote themselves on the web. We look forward to continuing to help our customers grow their businesses through honest feedback from their customers.
